Frank Murphy Memorial Museum |
Frank Murphy was born in Harbor Beach, Michigan, on April 13, 1890. Frank was the third of the four children born to John T. and Mary (Brennen) Murphy. Frank graduated from the University of Michigan Law School and returned to
Harbor Beach to practice law with his father, and later his brother. A member of the Democratic Party, Murphy was elected mayor of Detroit (1930-33) and Murphy was
elected as governor of Michigan in 1937. He was appointed Attorney General in 1939. He served as Governor-General/U.S. High Commissioner of the Philippine Islands. The following year the president nominated him to become a member of
the Supreme Court. Over the next nine years Murphy established himself as a strong defender of civil rights. Frank Murphy died in Detroit on 19th July, 1949. The Frank Murphy Birthplace is a simple rectangular one-and-one-half story frame house topped by a gable roof. The walls of the house are covered in clapboard siding. A small
one-story wing with a false front and flat roof is attached to one side of the house. This wing was used as a law office by Murphy's father, John F. Murphy. The Frank Murphy Memorial Museum is next to the Visitor's Center at 142 S Huron Avenue. Tours for the museum are available from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Hours are Noon to 4 P.M. Tuesday through Friday and 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. Saturday and Sunday and by appointment. Admission for adults is $2.00 and for children is $1.00. |
